Combating Stress

In this time of uncertainty, it's normal to feel concerned. However, it is equally important to stay calm and develop a strategy for stress-management that works for you. Remind yourself that there are experts dedicating themselves to handling the crisis, and remain focused on what is important to you. Remember to spend time taking care of yourself, your friends, and your family.

Read below for tips and strategies to manage stress.

Tips to Help Ease Stress

  • Take breaks from the news and social media
  • Practice mindful breathing exercises
  • Stretch or do yoga, try this at-home beginner yoga video
  • Meditate: try this 5 minute body scan
  • Limit screen time and unplug, set limits for yourself
  • Get some fresh air: go for a walk or jog
  • Play cards, board games, read, listen to podcasts, color, or do a puzzle
  • Stay connected to others: talk to them about your stressors
  • Get plenty of rest, be sure to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night

Mindful Breathing Exercise

Try this mindful breathing exercise
  • Breathe in through the nose for 2 counts (bring awareness to your body)
    • Hold your breath for 2 counts (bring awareness to your body)
  • Breathe out through your mouth for 2 counts (bring awareness your body).
    • Repeat 3x.
  • Increase your breath in for 4 counts, hold for 2, out for 4 counts.
    • Be aware of your body with each inhale and exhale.
    • Repeat 3x.
  • In for 6 counts, hold for 2, out for 6 counts
    • Be aware of your body with each inhale and exhale.
    • Repeat 3x.
  • In for 8 counts, hold for 2, out for 8 counts
    • Be aware of your body with each inhale and exhale.
    • Repeat 3x.
